Looking for a serious day of fishing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast? Captain Ron's 8-hour offshore charter out of Gulfport puts you right where the fish are – around and south of our barrier islands where the water gets deep and the action heats up. This isn't your typical half-day trip. We're talking about a full commitment to getting on some quality fish using both bottom fishing and trolling techniques. With space for up to 6 anglers, you'll have plenty of room to work without bumping elbows, and Captain Ron knows these waters like the back of his hand.
Captain Ron's been running charters out of Gulfport for years, and he's dialed in on where the fish stack up around our barrier islands. You'll start the day early – that's when the fishing is prime – and head south toward deeper water where the real action happens. The Mississippi Sound and the areas around Ship Island, Horn Island, and Petit Bois Island hold some serious structure that attracts baitfish, and where there's bait, there's game fish. This 8-hour trip gives you time to hit multiple spots, try different techniques, and really zero in on what's working. Don't expect to be rushed – Captain Ron knows that good fishing takes patience and the willingness to move around until you find where they're biting.
We're running a two-pronged approach on these trips. Bottom fishing gets you connected to the structure-loving fish that hang around the reefs, wrecks, and hard bottom areas south of the islands. Think heavy sinkers, circle hooks, and fresh bait dropped down to where the snappers, groupers, and other bottom dwellers live. Captain Ron's got all the tackle you need, from the heavy conventional reels to the right size hooks for what we're targeting. When we're trolling, we're covering water and looking for the pelagic species that cruise these offshore waters. We'll pull spreads of lures at different depths, watching the fish finder and adjusting speed based on what the water temperature and current are doing. The key is staying flexible – some days the bottom bite is hot, other days the trolling produces, and the best days give you both.
Red snapper is the star of the show when they're in season. These fish are aggressive biters when you find them on the right structure, and they fight hard all the way to the boat. Look for them around wrecks and reefs in 60 to 100+ feet of water. They're most active during their federal season, typically in summer months, and they'll hammer fresh squid or cut bait. The fun part about reds is they school up, so when you find one, there's usually more below.
King mackerel are the speed demons we're after when trolling. These fish can stretch over 30 pounds and they'll test your drag system when they make their runs. Spring through fall is prime time for kings in our area, and they love to cruise the edges of the barrier islands where the water drops off. When a king hits your trolled bait, you'll know it immediately – they're powerful fish that don't give up easy. Live bait works great, but Captain Ron also runs artificials that produce consistent strikes.
Vermilion snapper, or "mingos" as we call them locally, are smaller than reds but they're abundant and excellent table fare. These fish are perfect for anglers who want steady action, and they're often willing biters when the bigger fish are being finicky. You'll find them on the same structure as red snapper, just usually in slightly shallower water. They're year-round residents, making them a reliable target no matter when you book your trip.
Amberjack are the bruisers that will give you a workout. These fish can push 50+ pounds and they fight like they're twice that size. They love structure and they're not afraid to use it against you, so be ready for a tug-of-war when you hook up with one. AJs are most active in warmer months and they respond well to live bait or large jigs worked near the bottom. Landing a big amberjack is a team effort and a memory you won't forget.
An 8-hour offshore trip with Captain Ron gives you the best shot at experiencing what Gulf Coast fishing is all about. You're getting a full day with an experienced captain who knows where to find fish and how to put you on them using proven techniques. The barrier islands off Gulfport offer some of the most consistent fishing on the Mississippi coast, and this trip format gives you time to really make the most of it. Whether you're after dinner for the family or looking to test your skills against some serious game fish, this charter delivers the goods. Captain Ron's boat is set up for serious fishing, and with only 6 spots available, you'll get the personal attention that makes the difference between an okay day and a day you'll be talking about for years. Book early – the best fishing dates fill up fast, especially during peak season.
